Suffolk Photography Courses:

Suffolk Photography Course Flatford Mill, Sudbury and Long Melford.

The East Anglian countryside of Suffolk is a great place to run photography courses. This full-day practical photography workshop starts at Flatford Mill, which is famous for the landscape paintings of John Constable. We then move on to Sudbury, a delightful market town in the centre of Suffolk before finishing the course at Long Melford. Once you have arrived at our meeting point I will take care of transport between locations, dropping you back to your car at the end of the day. Please scroll down to see course dates and prices.

Flatford Mill has much to offer the photographer, from the meandering river Stour to reflective mill ponds and of course the picturesque Willie Lott’s cottage (or indeed house as it’s now known). This is a great location for learning your compositional skills and the use of available light.

Sudbury also features the river Stour which has in my opinion one of the best weirs in the county. This is an ideal place to practice creative shutter speed skills.

The last shoot of the day is in Long Melford at one of the most photogenic churches in Suffolk. Here we are able to have a go at both outside and inside architectural photography, time permitting.

On each of my location workshops I have a maximum of five participants to allow for plenty of personal tuition time. By limiting course numbers I can teach a mixed ability class making this course suitable for beginners, intermediate and the more experienced photographers. By joining a group photography course you are learning with like-minded people who in my experience enjoy bouncing ideas off one another and exchanging information, especially when it comes to camera equipment.

Subjects covered during the day include : camera controls and menus, fill flash, photographic filters, creative use of shutter speed and aperture, white balance, exposure modes, exposure histogram, composition and use of light and colour. For the experienced photographer I will adjust the course content to take into account your higher level of technical knowledge. As well as all the techniques already mentioned, my courses are designed to boost your confidence as a photographer so you can take great images on a regular basis.

All my workshops are conducted in a fun and relaxed manner. I think we all learn more if we are not under constant pressure. I strive to make my workshops educational and enjoyable. If you have any questions during or after the course I’m happy to answer them at any time. Once the workshop is finished I will send you a full set of notes covering all the subjects discussed during each photographic session. I think this is also very important because it’s hard to retain all the information you are given at the time. If you would like a critique of your best images taken on the course you are more than welcome to email me a selection of them for me to view.

Although the photography tuition takes place in a landscape environment all the skills you learn on each session are easily transferable to other genres of photography such as wildlife, sports or people photography. We will also discuss how to work out the position of the sun for sunrise and sunset photography and the calculation of tide times for coastal photography.
